Three Cheers!

Further to our previous post, the April 26, 2014 Journal Pioneer editorial was all about the PEIAHA's 50th Anniversary.  Here's just a sample of the excellent points made
"Yes, today the association marks 50 years of caring and giving on Prince Edward Island. It is an important milestone for the group to say the least, and while most people don’t realize it, it is a day that ought to be important to the rest of us as well."
It's a great piece and you can read the whole thing here:

The Day After

We had a wonderful celebration yesterday for the PEIAHA's 50th Anniversary.  Photos will follow soon, but here is a great article from the April 25,  2014 Journal Pioneer, for the record.

Appreciation!

In 2012, Premier Robert Ghiz declared that the last Saturday of April each year would be Healthcare Auxiliary Appreciation Day on Prince Edward Island.  And that's tomorrow!  What a wonderful honour for a dedicated group of volunteers from across beautiful PEI.

Not only is tomorrow a special day to recognize the contributions made by auxiliary volunteers, we will also be celebrating the PEIAHA's 50th Anniversary.  We have a lovely day planned and are expecting a great turnout from auxiliary members across the Island.

As a very special bonus, we are pleased to announce that the Honourable Marion Reid will be our guest speaker.  A member of the Order of Canada and the Order of PEI, Mrs. Reid was the first female speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island and later the first female Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.  She accomplished all of this while being a busy mother of eight children, grandmother and volunteer.  We are guaranteed to have an interesting and entertaining afternoon with Mrs. Reid!

To mark this milestone anniversary, our PEIAHA history has been updated.  Our collective history goes back 50 years, but two of our member auxiliaries have roots that go back more than a century.  We are so proud of what we have achieved.

The Prince Edward Island Hospital Ladies Aid formed shortly after the hospital opened in Charlottetown in 1884.  It was the second hospital in the city, with the Charlottetown Hospital opening five years earlier.

When the Queen Elizabeth Hospital opened in 1982, these two hospitals were closed.  The PEI Hospital became the Prince Edward Home and operated as such until a new building was recently built in another part of the city.  Palliative care services remain in the old PEI Hospital building.

This news item from the April 22, 1914 Charlottetown Guardian is a small glimpse into the good work being done by hospital auxiliaries even a century ago.

50 Years Working Together

1964 was a busy year on Prince Edward Island, with events held across the province to commemorate the 1864 Charlottetown Conference.  Civic pride and a sense of historical significance, mixed with heady optimism, created a joyous time.

On May 8 of that year, representatives from nine of the twelve hospital auxiliaries from across PEI met at the old PEI Hospital in Charlottetown to form the Prince Edward Island Association of Hospital Auxiliaries.  We are pleased to still be together 50 years later.

Some things are different, of course.  We changed the Hospital in our name to Healthcare to include manor auxiliaries.  There are fewer member auxiliaries, with the amalgamation of the two Charlottetown hospitals into the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the combining of Junior and Senior auxiliaries across the province.  The items we raise money to purchase are less likely to be johnny shirts and bed pans and more likely to be diagnostic imaging and medical equipment.

50 years of working together, our auxiliaries side-by-side across the Island, has created strong bonds between our groups, and a sense of support and cooperation.  The PEIAHA has allowed the large and small healthcare auxiliaries to learn from each other.  We all have the same goals: to ensure our neighbours have the best healthcare possible.

Harmony, kindness, dedication, resilience, and hard work are what has made our Association a success. Volunteers created the healthcare system on PEI and remain at its core, quietly doing important work.

The Stewart Memorial Healthcare Auxiliary are the PEIAHA executive for the 2013-15 term.  They have planned a special semi-annual meeting celebration for April 26, 2014 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Ellerslie.  We are looking forward to marking this special milestone.

SMHA also hosted the 40th annual celebration in 2004.  Here are some memories from that day:
